What it's like
This is one of the best-known ocean pools in Australia: a 50 m lap pool cut into the rocks at the south end of Bondi, with waves crashing over the outer wall and the whole beach in view. There is also a smaller kids pool. Above it, the club building has a sauna, hot showers, lockers, towel hire and a cafe.
The club was founded in 1929 by lifesavers who wanted to keep fit through winter, and the pool was built for them to train in. It is a licensed winter swimming club, and members once had to swim in three winter Sundays out of four for five years to keep their membership.
When to go
Published hours are Monday to Friday from 6am and weekends from 6.30am, until about 6.30pm. The pool closes on Thursdays for cleaning, though it opens on some summer Thursdays when tides allow. Public entry depends on tides and swimming races. Early morning has the best light and fewest people.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is on Notts Avenue at the southern end of Bondi Beach. Buses run from Bondi Junction station to Bondi Beach. Parking around Bondi is paid and scarce in summer.
Good to know
Entry is paid: published prices were adult $10, child $7 and family $30, but check the club's site. Lifeguards are on duty during opening hours.
